Mandela Grocery

Multi Stakeholder Co-ops

Cooperatives like traditional businesses have multiple stakeholders. These can include the worker-owners, employees, customers, suppliers, etc. The examples below are grocery store cooperatives that are owned and controlled by the workers and the customers.

Example: Mandela Grocery

The Mandela Grocery is a worker-owned grocery store in West Oakland, California. Mandela prioritizes sourcing from local farmers and businesses run by people of color. Since the 1960’s this part of Oakland had not had a grocery store in the main business district. That changed in 2004 when neighbors came together to form Mandela Grocery Cooperative.
